On the last day of the Kiritimati Island leg of my South Pacific adventure I had some free time. All the other fishermen had boarded their flight north to Hawaii at 7am. My flight southwest from Kiritimati Island to Fiji wasn't until 4pm. What to do...
I slept in. (Everyone else was up at 3:30am. Suckers.)
I had breakfast.
I talked with a couple of guys that work for the World Bank. (Super interesting discussion about their organization and how Kiritimati Island might develop over the next decade.)
I waited for my ride. But I wasn't heading to the airport. Oh, no. I was going mountaineering!
Except Kiritimati Island is a coral atoll. Atolls are not generally known for their mountains. Most aren't very tall. The high point on Kiritimati Island, Joe's Hill, is only 13 meters. Yes. You read that right. 13 meters. About 42 feet. Not tall at all.
