I swear I'm not actually trying to tag all 50 state high points. It just kind of happens. Here we were in Kentucky and there was the Kentucky high point just a five hour drive away. What's a guy to do?
It was LATE by the time we got to Black Mountain. It'd been dark for hours. Our poor rental car was never designed for the Black Mountain Ridge Road. It wasn't the worst gravel road I've driven on (or even the worst one I've driven in a front-wheel drive vehicle (RIP my Honda Accord that served so admirably even without a brush guard)), but this Toyota Camry (or whatever we picked up in Nashville) got its fair share of bottom scrapes and tire spins as I coaxed it toward the summit.
There's nothing really special about this high point. There's a radio tower next to the plaque. But we were able to drive right up to it, grab a selfie by the headlights, and look at a gorgeous new species of trillium.
If you're not chasing high points, there's no good reason to go here. But seriously, I'm not chasing high points.
